Phola Gangchen (Molamenqing) was first climbed by Bruce Farmer and Dick Price of New Zealand on May 14, 1981. They were followed by Warwick Anderson and Ron McLeod on May 16 and Geoff Gables, Bruce Clark, Paul Chapman and Tony Charlton on May 20.

Jerzy Kukuczka and Artur Hajzer were the first to climb the northwest ridge on the right to the west summit (7966m) on September 18, 1987, continuing on to the Main Summit. Kukuczka thus became the second climber (after Reinhold Messner) to climb all 14 8000m peaks.

14 Langtang Ri At Sunrise From Shishapangma North Base Camp Langtang Ri (7239m) is the second mountain to the northwest of Shishapangma at sunrise from Shishapangma North Chinese Base Camp. Langtang Ri was climbed for the first time by Noboru Yamada, Makihiro Wakao, Soichi Nasu and Ang Rinji Sherpa on October 10, 1981 via the south ridge. On October 11, Minoru Iizawa and Isashi Nakaota also reached the top.

The panorama includes advanced base camp at the lower left near the ice pinnacles of the Shishapangma Glacier, Phola Gangchen on the left, Shishapangma North Face partially in the clouds in the centre, and Porong Ri on the far right. Yebokangjiat (7068m, Jebo Kangijale Peak) is the bump in the ridge just to the right of Shishapangma.
